Will Fisher's Experience as a Therapist

As a teen, I was always that friend in the peer group that everyone went to when they were having problems: girlfriends, boyfriends, parents, teachers, etc. I really liked being there for people. After college I went onto grad school to become an ordained minister. The role of pastor seemed to combine several of my passions and gifts. It was not long before I realized I needed more training. I bumped up my training with adolescents and their families. I spent the next almost 2 decades working with youth, young adults, and their families primarily from a spiritual perspective. Finally, I got back to school to get the tools and education I needed to help people from a psychological and emotional perspective.

Mental Health is an important, yet mis-understood part of the whole person. Good information and and safe access to quality mental health is more important than ever in our society. I am proud to be a part of that. Helping people recognize, accept, and learn to manage their psychological and emotional health is as great an honor to me as walking parts of their spiritual journey has been (and occasionally still is). Sometimes it is important to find a more immediate, if temporary fix, an emotional Band-Aid, if you will, for a client’s emergent concerns. However, when the crisis is managed, I prefer to encourage my clients to dig deeper, to go beyond the symptoms and look for healing of the causes where possible.

My approach has always been what Carl Rogers called the power of the "therapeutic relationship", which includes: unconditional positive regard, compassion, genuineness, empathy, and congruency. We help to empower the client by encouraging them to find their own solutions, which always lie within them.
